Stathis Mavrommatis
Biography
Since early youth, he spent most of his time with music studying theory, piano, flute, sax and chamber music repeatedly gaining praises, scholarships and prizes. He was awarded with distinction the degrees in Harmony, Orchestration of Wind Instruments, Counterpoint, Fugue and Composition, the Diploma in Saxophone (honors and first prize,1996) with the distinguished prof. E.Kiosoglou from “F.Nakas” Conservatory of Athens and the Saxophone Diplomas LLCM (Performers’ Recital Diploma of Licentiate) and FLCM (Performers’ Diploma of Fellowship) from London College of Music. He has also attended various masterclass and perfecting programs in saxophone with the eminent prof.s J.Yves Fourmeau in Paris (1997-1999), Cl.Delangle in Gap (France, 1999) and E.Rousseau in Teramo (Italy, 2001).
Since 1996 he is the first alto saxophonist of the Athens Wind Orchestra, he is teaching saxophone at the “F.Nakas” Conservatory of Athens and he also holds a stable collaboration with the Athens State Orchestra.
At the same time, he is pursuing a soloist career giving recitals and performing with music ensembles, symphony bands and orchestras both in Greece and abroad. Among them the Athens State Orchestra, the Cyprus State Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Colors, the Symphony Orchestra of the Greek Radio, the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana Sinfonietta in USA, the Costanta Symphony Orchestra in Romania, the RAI Symphony Orchestra, the Hellenic Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Piraeus Young Symphony Orchestra “D.Mitropoulos”, the Athens Wind Orchestra, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra in Canada, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio and others.
Distinguished Greek and foreign composers have dedicated to him their music among which twelve (12) concertos being performed as world premiers.
In 2003 he played at the XIII World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis (USA) and in 2011 at the 1st International Pera Music Festival in Istanbul and at the 3rd AXIA International Festival in Naxos island.
In 2005 he recorded (live) sax music compositions of D. Constantinides with the Louisiana Sinfonietta (USA), including “Concerto No. 2 for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra (Grecian Variations)”, dedicated to him, in world premier. In 2006 he has premiered “Pièce de Concert” for alto saxophone and orchestra of N. Astrinidis with “Dr. Ermil Nichifor” Symphony Orchestra at the Romanian Athenaeum Concert Hall in Bucharest dedicated to him, “Prosodion” for alto saxophone and eight players of V. Kitsos with the Hellenic Group of Contemporary Music in Istanbul and in 2010, during a music tour in Canada, “Concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra” of A. Carastathis with Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra also dedicated to him.
In 2006 went into circulation by “Acroasis” his first CD “Music for Saxophone, Piano and Percussion by Greek Composers” with contemporary music pieces almost all dedicated to him and in 2010 by “Lyra Classics” a second CD “Three Greek Concertos for Soprano Saxophone and String Orchestra” (two of which dedicated to him), as world premier recordings, realized in Sofia with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the last one honored by Union of Greek Critics for Drama and Music as a nominee for the 2010 Music Awards. His recording work has collected praiseworthy comments worldwide both from distinguished reviewers as from renowned saxophone soloists.
Radio broadcasting of his performances has taken place repeatedly in the third program of the Greek Radio (ERA 3).
He is a founding member of the “OLYMPIC TRIO” (violin-sax-piano) and the founder and the artistic director of the “AKROAMA” Saxophone Quartet aiming at interpreting a wide sax repertoire from baroque and renaissance to contemporary and jazz music, introducing also important Greek composers to the public.
Moreover he is a founding member of the Hellenic Saxophone Association, a member of the French Saxophonists’ Association (A-SAX) and a member of the Clarinet & Saxophone Society of Great Britain.
Since 2011 he has been appointed by Yamaha Music Europe GmbH as a “Yamaha Artist”.
